The study investigates the premises underlying the emergence of Impressionist features in post-war Moldovan painting, within the context of the aesthetic and cultural transformations of the 1950s-1970s. The period of ideological „thaw” facilitated the gradual overcoming of the constraints imposed by Socialist Realism and encouraged a shift toward a plastic expression centered on light and color. The sources of this process include the influence the reminiscences of the Romanian interwar modernism, of the Russian school of lyrical landscape painting, indirect contacts with French Impressionism, and the rediscovery of local nature. In the work of artists such as Mihai Grecu, Valentina Rusu Ciobanu, and Eleonora Romanescu, plein-air practice reinforces the expressive autonomy of the color patch and chromatic rhythm. Impressionism thus asserts itself as a visual attitude adapted to the Moldovan context, marking an essential stage in the modernization of the plastic art in the Republic of Moldova.
